In Rinpoche's own words

The framework below is his, not ours: “What, why, and how. That structure is very good.”

Why he stayed
“I started to dream. And I started to invest — not bringing some project there. I truly wanted to invest my life there. It is not just about a building. It is about a community.
I'm not a doer, not a worker. But in Manang, especially the people — they offer their heart. That is what keeps me there. UC Berkeley,2026 年 4 月 22 日 UC Berkeley, 22 April 2026

The villagers sold the land at a very low price. That, he says, is where the real connection lies.

Milarepa

His reading of Milarepa is this project's best bridge

“People think Milarepa was torturing himself. But if you really look at the essential point — it is all about de-stress. Extreme weather gives you a level of stress you have no chance to ignore. You need to face it, you need to be with it. In this extreme weather, if you ignore your stress, you won't survive.” UC Berkeley,2026 年 4 月 22 日 UC Berkeley, 22 April 2026

This asks the listener to believe nothing. It translates Milarepa from “extreme ascetic” into “a way of working with stress” — and it is his own reading, not a marketing gloss. For international audiences, for non-Buddhists, for press, this is the best opening line we have.

And the place is real: Milarepa's cave is still there, and you can see the mark he left. In 2024 His Holiness led the pilgrimage there and looked out at the bow the hunter left at the mouth of the cave.

Why credentials are never the opening
“If you trace that family back five or six hundred years… they never announced what they are or who they are, and never asked to be honoured. Their standing was earned simply by their presence, by pure conduct and practice.
“Spiritual status can create enormous distance. Here there is almost none. People feel very close. 28 July 2026 · Manang vision teaching recording

So “never lead with titles” is not a marketing position — it is how this family has worked for five or six centuries. Every piece of copy and design follows from it. Break this rule and you are not breaking a style guide; you are breaking the lineage's own practice.

What this project is

Manang valley, Nepal, 3,397 metres. A yogi family has kept this place for sixty years. The third generation is now building it into a place where people can actually do retreat — twenty-one stone cottages, one Grand Café, a water system. The design is finished and the bill of quantities is done. What we are raising now is the first money to break ground.
