EN Tashi delek. Today I should speak clearly about the restoration of the Nyeshang retreat house. It falls to me to explain it — because Nyeshang is the place my uncle went to.
[2] 0:22–0:39
EN That uncle — in the Mase family of that generation there were five brothers. All five remained in lifelong retreat until they were fifty-eight. One of them was my father; another was Uncle Phuntsok.
[3] 0:39–0:58
EN They went on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash. Their mother died there and was cremated there. My father and the whole Mase family circumambulated Kailash thirteen times, and her relics were laid to rest on the mountain.
[4] 0:58–1:14
EN After that — the youngest of the five brothers was Uncle Phuntsok.
Because his mother's relics rested there, he said he too would stay. So he settled at Serlung monastery and remained.
[5] 1:15–1:32
EN During the troubles he left and went to Nyeshang. There he became known as the Nyeshang hermit, and the people held great faith in him. He was deep in all three — hearing, reflecting and meditating.
And the Mase family line descends from Drung Mase Lodrö Rinchen — that is, the Zurmang Kagyü.
[6] 1:32–1:52
EN What is called the Zurmang Kagyü — its essence was carried down from Mase. Mase Lodrö: this line has always been held in high regard.
Both the dharma lineage and the family line came to fruition here.
[7] 1:53–2:09
EN So my uncle's seat is there, in Nyeshang. There he turned the wheel of renunciation and meditation. In his later years he lived as a hermit, and a great many disciples formed a dharma connection with him.
[8] 2:10–2:25
EN And so, in order to restore all of it — if his seat is rebuilt, it is like a great fire that had died down being rekindled.
[9] 2:25–2:42
EN After that, H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche did something. And what did it mean?
It meant this: the one who had been living in that region was recognised — he was the tulku of Selung monastery.
[10] 2:42–2:58
EN He — the second generation — was recognised as a tulku. Through that, H.H. the Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche took up the responsibility — the restoration now, and the support and assistance for it, are carried by him. Serlung monastery belongs to the Drikung Kagyü, and so it falls to him.
[11] 2:58–3:19
EN The main point is this: in that place there is a dharma lineage and a family line — the family line being the human descent, that is the Mase family; and the dharma lineage being the transmission of practice, of secret mantra, of the blessing that comes of actual practice.
So that neither is broken, the Nyeshang retreat house is being restored. And what is the fruit of restoring it?
[12] 3:19–3:34
EN In this world, from the moment one is born human, there are said to be three: this life, the next life, and the bardo. In this life everyone wishes for long life, freedom from illness, and happiness — and for that, rituals and long-life practices are needed.
[13] 3:35–3:51
因此,如果尼香閉關房重建起來,對當地所有人、對整個山谷,就會生起安樂;
EN And for the next life, for all who have passed, dedication of merit is needed.
So if the Nyeshang retreat house is restored, happiness will arise for all the local people and for the whole valley; and people will come to understand karma, cause and effect — the eye that sees causality will open. If there is a retreat house, a place of practice —
[14] 3:52–4:06
EN Then one's own dharma lineage, together with its renewal, becomes strong.
For this reason H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche held this region in his intention and regarded it with love and compassion, so that the dharma lineage would not slacken and break. And now, this lineage of my uncle's —
[15] 4:07–4:24
EN — he gave his heart and loving care to all the old disciples, and it is under his protection that the restoration proceeds.
And for all of us who help: our own parents, however old, however long departed — their minds have not died.
[16] 4:25–4:38
EN Consciousness does not die. There is no birth and there is no death. Whatever virtue or non-virtue one has done travels with them. So dedication for the departed is necessary.
Wherever they are, all virtue turns into that dedication.
[17] 4:38–4:57
EN That becomes the dedication for those who have gone. As for rituals for the living — the illness and obstruction met in this life are the fruit of the various actions accumulated in former lives, and so obstructors and spirits appear now. In order to clear those obstacles —
[18] 4:58–5:18
EN — the rituals for all who live here come from this. And it becomes service to the Buddha's teaching. In these three senses this is very important. So I thank you all for taking it up. And now, if the dharma lineage and the family line are explained in this way, it will be clear to everyone.
[19] 5:19–5:37
EN And so I offer my thanks. Separately: our Mase family line is now held by Tulku Chime Dorje. As for Chime Dorje — his predecessor was the siddha Chime Dorje who appeared in the Domé region. There are many accounts and biographies of his life.
[20] 5:37–5:52
[Note] The first Gar Chime Dorje practised the Six Yogas of Naropa; the footprints in stone are kept in the main hall of Gar Monastery, Nangchen, Qinghai. This matches the written introduction to him. Editorial note, not the speaker's words.
EN He himself practised in retreat for thirteen years, and was able to leave his footprints in stone — footprints that can still be seen today. And the reincarnation recognised by H.H. Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoche is this Tulku Chime Dorje.
[21] 5:52–6:07
EN So may none of you hold any doubt, and may you serve the sacred Dharma, the precious teaching of the Buddha. This is the very life of practice; this is what practice means. That is my introduction. Thank you all.
