Lama Mase Karma Drubgyud Tenzin Rinpoche was born in the Iron Snake year of the Tibetan calendar, 2068 — the year 1941 in the Western calendar — to his father Mase Phuntsok and his mother Tsering Paldzom. His father was of the bloodline of Drung Mase Chökyi Lodrö Rinpoche, known by the name Karma Ösal Gyurme Dorje Rinpoche, or widely celebrated as Melung Mtsampa Rinpoche. This great father was the youngest uncle of His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche.

His father’s entire family retinue had come from the Kham Nangchen region on pilgrimage and to perform meritorious deeds at the precious snow mountain, Mount Kailash. Having completed their pilgrimage and virtuous activities, they were about to return home when, quite unexpectedly, the father Rinpoche resolved to enter strict retreat. He remained at Selung Monastery, near the precious snow mountain, in retreat for nine years, and thus became known also as Gangri Mtsamchung Rinpoche — “the Small Retreat Rinpoche of the Snow Mountain.”

Karma Drubgyud Rinpoche was born at a nomadic encampment near the snow mountain called Borlhas, accompanied by many auspicious signs and marks. At birth, his eyes gazed upward; the umbilical cord was wrapped around him like a meditation rope; and his body remained in the seven-point posture of Vairochana. After seven days, his eyes settled naturally to their ordinary position.

From the time he could speak as a small child, he repeatedly spoke as though recalling his previous life, saying: “My monastery is Selung Monastery.” Whenever he saw a white horse, he would declare it to be his own riding horse. And whenever guests arrived at home, he would invariably say that the welcoming party from his monastery had not yet come.

The entire community of Selung Monastery thereupon focused their attention especially upon him. Over seven days of ritual examination, they tested several remarkable children, and the lot fell upon this boy alone. The wondrous signs of the child were then reported to his sole refuge and root guru, Drikung Skyabgon Zhiwé Lodrö, who recognized him without doubt as the reincarnation of Selung Tulku Rinpoche Könchok Trinlé Namgyal. As a symbol of auspicious connection, His Holiness also presented a khatam of the famous White Dakini.

It is said that this khatam was meant to be offered to the monastery at the time of enthronement — yet due to great obstacles arising from circumstance, the formal enthronement never came to pass. To this day the khatam remains in Rinpoche’s keeping.

In particular, from his earliest youth until the end of his life, Karma Drubgyud Rinpoche’s primary practice consisted of spending his time in retreat — with the empowerments, transmissions, and pith instructions received through his father Rinpoche’s lineage — carrying out the four branches of approach and accomplishment.

Preliminary Practices

  1. Beginning at age eight at Selung Monastery: the Karling Zhitro preliminaries — 400,000 recitations, completed with quality
  2. Longchen Nyingthig preliminaries — 400,000
  3. Thugsdrub Yangnyingdüpa preliminaries — 400,000
  4. Yangzab Könchok Chidü preliminaries — 400,000

His Holiness was greatly delighted and officially recognized Rinpoche as a lama of the supreme victorious Drikung lineage.

In particular, His Holiness gave extensive and profound instructions that a new retreat center must be established at the seat of Drubgyud father and son — Künzang Lhundrub Monastery in Nyéshang (Manang). His Holiness further instructed Gar Monastery’s tulku, Chimé Dorje Rinpoche, to assume primary responsibility for the establishment of this retreat center.

However, the master himself was now drawing together the final activities for his disciples in this life. As a last display — for the sake of disciples attached to ordinary appearances — he showed the conduct of fasting and austerity (nyungné) for approximately one year. Finally, in a small dwelling near Bodhanath in Nepal, on the 29th day of the 9th Tibetan month of the year 2147, he manifested the passing into dharmata.

The retreat master and heir-son lama, Ajo Rinpoche of Khragu Monastery, performed the thugsdam meditation-clearance ceremonies. Rinpoche remained in thugsdam for five days. On the 4th Tibetan day, Khenpo Karma Lhabü Rinpoche, retreat master of the Khragu Sraskhang Drubkhang, performed an elaborate and profound bathing ritual for the sacred remains. From the 4th through the 9th day, disciples from all directions came to pay their respects to the sacred remains. All faithful disciples offered prayers and aspirations, fulfilling every wish of their hearts.

Finally, on the 10th day of the 10th Tibetan month, at Drikung Tara Sangchen Drubdé — the retreat center of Skyabje Nuppa Rinpoche, located near the Sakyü Dorje Phakmo sacred site — Skyabje Nuppa Rinpoche, the younger reincarnation of Drubwang Rinpoche, Tulku Rabzang Rinpoche, and twenty-five lamas, tulkus, and virtuous spiritual friends performed the Zhitro ritual and offered the sacred remains into the charnel ground.
