Birth and Family Background
Karma Drubgyud Tenzin Rinpoche was born in the Iron Snake year of the Tibetan calendar, 2068 — the year 1941 CE — to his father Mase Phuntsok and his mother Tsering Paldzom. His father was of the bloodline of Drung Mase Chökyi Lodrö Rinpoche, known by the name Karma Ösal Gyurme Dorje Rinpoche, or widely celebrated as Melong Tsampa Rinpoche. This great father was the youngest uncle of H.E. Garchen Rinpoche.
Pilgrimage to Kailash and the Father's Retreat
His father's entire family retinue had come from the Kham Nangchen region on pilgrimage and to perform meritorious deeds at the precious snow mountain, Mount Kailash. Having completed their pilgrimage and virtuous activities, they were about to return to their homeland when, quite unexpectedly, the father Rinpoche resolved to enter strict retreat. He remained at Selung Monastery, near the precious snow mountain, in retreat for nine years, and thus became widely known as Gangri Tsampa Chung Rinpoche — "the Small Retreat Rinpoche of the Snow Mountain."
Auspicious Signs at Birth
Karma Drubgyud Rinpoche was born at a nomadic encampment near the snow mountain called Korlhé (bskor lhas), accompanied by many remarkable auspicious signs and marks:
- At birth, his eyes gazed upward.
- The umbilical cord was wrapped around him like a meditation rope.
- His body remained in the seven-point posture of Vairochana.
- After seven days, his eyes settled naturally to their ordinary position.
Memories of a Previous Life
From the time he could speak as a small child, he repeatedly spoke as though recalling his previous life:
"My monastery is Selung Monastery."
Whenever he saw a white horse, he would declare it to be his own riding horse. And whenever guests arrived at home, he would invariably say that the welcoming party from his monastery had not yet come.
Recognition as the Selung Reincarnation
The entire community of Selung Monastery thereupon focused their attention especially upon him. Over seven days of ritual examination, they tested several remarkable children, and the lot fell upon this boy alone. The wondrous signs of the child were then reported to his sole refuge and root guru, Drikung Skyabgon Zhiwé Lodrö, who recognized him without doubt as the reincarnation of Selung Tulku Rinpoche Könchok Trinlé Namgyal. As a symbol of auspicious connection, His Holiness also presented a khatam of the famous White Dakini.
It is said that this khatam was meant to be offered to the monastery at the time of enthronement — yet due to great obstacles arising from circumstance, the formal enthronement never came to pass. To this day the khatam remains in Rinpoche's keeping.
A Life of Retreat and the Four Branches
In particular, from his earliest youth until the end of his life, Karma Drubgyud Rinpoche's primary practice consisted of spending his time in retreat — with the empowerments, transmissions, and pith instructions received through his father Rinpoche's lineage — carrying out the four branches of approach and accomplishment. The principal practices he undertook are as follows:
Preliminary Practices (Ngöndro)
- Beginning at age eight at Selung Monastery: the Karling Zhitro preliminaries — the fourfold 100,000 accumulations, completed thoroughly
- Longchen Nyingthig preliminaries — 400,000
- Thugsdrub Yangnyingdüpa preliminaries — 400,000
- Yangzab Könchok Chidü preliminaries — 400,000
Main Accomplishment Retreats — Completed in Full
- Chakrasamvara — retreat according to the Drikung tradition
- Yidam Vajrakumara — complete accomplishment retreat
- Nyungné (fasting and purification practice with eight precepts) — 108 sessions
- Minling Dorjé Sempa — accomplishment retreat
- Sangthig Dorjé Sempa — approach mantra, completed in full
- Chöd feast offering, Rinchen Trengwa — the outer, inner, and secret aspects each completed in full; performed at different locations — areas of relatives, charnel grounds, villages, and the snow mountain — for 100 days each
- Thugsdrub Yangnyingdüpa — accomplishment retreat
- Tsé Drub Sangdü — longevity accomplishment retreat
- Karling Zhitro — extensive, medium, and condensed editions; all three completed
- Namchö Öpak — accomplishment retreat
- Könchok Chidü
- Mingyur Dorje terma — medicine ritual
- Gönpo Mikyöpa (Akṣobhya) — accomplishment retreat
- Kunrik — accomplishment retreat
- Drolchok Tara — mandala offering practice
- Zabtik Tara — accomplishment retreat
Regular and Daily Practices
- Morning session: the Öchok light offering, incense offering (sang), and golden libation (serkyem) — performed without interruption.
- Afternoon: the Könchok Chidü ritual and the Achi (Chökyi Drölma) offering — performed without interruption.
Likewise, each day without interruption:
- 1,000 recitations of the Tathagatagarbha dhāraṇī
- 1,000 recitations of the medicine ritual dhāraṇī
- 5,000 recitations of the Dharmakāya Amitābha dhāraṇī
- 5,000 recitations of the Saṃbhogakāya Avalokiteśvara dhāraṇī
- 5,000 recitations of the Nirmāṇakāya Padmasambhava dhāraṇī
Traditional Arts and Sciences
In addition, from youth, alongside his study and contemplation, he trained to a high level of proficiency in thangka painting, medicine, white astrology (dkar rtsis), and black astrology (nag rtsis).
Recognition by His Holiness Drikung Chetsang
On the 24th day of the first Tibetan month of the year 2146, his son Mase Tashi Tobgyal, together with his siblings, formally presented to His Holiness Drikung Skyabgon Chetsang Dorje Chang Könchok Tendzin Künzang Trinlé Lhundrub Rinpoche a detailed account of the life of Lama Drubgyud Tenzin. His Holiness was greatly delighted and officially recognized Rinpoche as a lama of the supreme victorious Drikung lineage.
Instructions for the Retreat Center and the Passing
In particular, His Holiness gave extensive and profound instructions that a new retreat center must be established at the seat of Drubgyud father and son — Künzang Lhundrub Monastery in Nyeshang (Manang). His Holiness further instructed Gar Monastery's tulku, Chimé Dorje Rinpoche, to assume primary responsibility for the establishment of this retreat center.
The Final Display
However, the master himself was now drawing together the final activities for his disciples in this life. As a last display — for the sake of disciples attached to ordinary appearances — he showed the conduct of fasting and austerity (nyungné) for approximately one year. Finally, in a small dwelling near Swayambhu (Phagpa Shingkun) in Nepal, on the 29th day of the 9th Tibetan month of the year 2147, he manifested the passing into dharmata.
Thugsdam and the Bathing Ritual
- The retreat master and heir-son lama, Ajo Rinpoche of Thrangu Monastery, performed the thukdam meditation-clearance ceremonies.
- Rinpoche remained in thukdam for five days.
- On the 4th Tibetan day, Khenpo Karma Lhabü Rinpoche, retreat master of the Thrangu Sraskhang Drubkhang, performed an elaborate and profound bathing ritual for the sacred remains.
- From the 4th through the 9th day, disciples from all directions came to pay their respects to the sacred remains.
- All faithful disciples offered prayers and aspiration prayers, fulfilling every wish of their hearts.
The Cremation Ceremony
Finally, on the 10th day of the 10th Tibetan month, at Drikung Tara Sangchen Drubdé — the retreat center of Skyabje Nuppa Rinpoche, located near the Sankhu Vajrayoginī (Dorje Phakmo) sacred site — Skyabje Nuppa Rinpoche, Tulku Rabzang Rinpoche — the younger incarnation of Drubwang Rinpoche — together with twenty-five lamas, tulkus, and virtuous spiritual friends performed the Zhitro ritual and performed the cremation, consigning the sacred remains to the flames.
Opening of the Charnel Container and Sacred Relics
Skyabje Nuppa Rinpoche performed the bathing ritual at the charnel house each day. On the 15th Tibetan day, through the ceremony of the Victorious Lord Akshobhya (Gönpo Mikyöpa), the charnel container was opened. For the benefit of the faithful as objects of veneration:
- On the skull, the syllable A (ཨ) appeared spontaneously.
- On the forehead, the sun and moon appeared spontaneously.
- Numerous sacred relics and blessed supports emerged.
Memorial Offerings — Seven-Week Schedule
| Week | Ritual |
|---|---|
| 1st | Namchö Öpak ritual — 7 days |
| 2nd | Gyalwa Gyatso Nine Deities according to the Karma tradition — 7 days |
| 3rd | Chöd feast offering, Rinchen Trengwa, according to the Mase tradition — 7 days |
| 4th | Recitation of the Prajñāpāramitā in One Hundred Thousand Lines (Yum Tongphak) |
| 5th | Chakrasamvara according to the Karma tradition — 7 days |
| 6th | Terma mantra offering and Sojong purification ritual — 7 days |
| 7th | Namchö Öpak — 7 days |
The 49th Day and Completion of Offerings
On the 49th day, all disciples gathered together at the great monastery at Swayambhu (Phagpa Shingkun) and performed the Karling Zhitro ganachakra feast, completing all forty-nine days of memorial offerings.
This brief summary of the deeds of the departed master was offered by his devoted disciple-son, Tashi Tobgyal, on the 28th of December, 2020.

Finally, in a small dwelling near Bodhanath in Nepal, on the 29th day of the 9th Tibetan month of the year 2147, he manifested the passing into dharmata.
Thugsdam and the Bathing Ritual
- The retreat master and heir-son lama, Ajo Rinpoche of Khragu Monastery, performed the thukdam meditation-clearance ceremonies.
- Rinpoche remained in thukdam for five days.
- On the 4th Tibetan day, Khenpo Karma Lhabü Rinpoche, retreat master of the Khragu Sraskhang Drubkhang, performed an elaborate and profound bathing ritual for the sacred remains.
- From the 4th through the 9th day, disciples from all directions came to pay their respects to the sacred remains.
- All faithful disciples offered prayers and aspiration prayers, fulfilling every wish of their hearts.
The Cremation Ceremony
Finally, on the 10th day of the 10th Tibetan month, at Drikung Tara Sangchen Drubdé — the retreat center of Skyabje Nuppa Rinpoche, located near the Sakyü Dorje Phakmo sacred site — Skyabje Nuppa Rinpoche, the younger reincarnation of Drubwang Rinpoche, Tulku Rabzang Rinpoche, and twenty-five lamas, tulkus, and virtuous spiritual friends performed the Zhitro ritual and offered the sacred remains into the charnel ground.
