“People think Milarepa was torturing himself. But if you really look at the essential point — it is all about de-stress. Extreme weather gives you a level of stress you have no chance to ignore. You need to face it, you need to be with it. In this extreme weather, if you ignore your stress, you won't survive.”
manang vision/GCDR Manang visionShared/
In His Own Words
Two sources, both first person, both ready to quote. The English is what he actually said; the Chinese is a translation. Quote the English, never back-translate it.
1. The UC Berkeley talk, 22 April 2026
"Annapurna: A Generational Legacy," International House, University of California, Berkeley. Organised by ReGen250, co-sponsored by Berkeley's Department of Anthropology, the Himalayan Studies Initiative at the Institute for South Asia Studies, and the Center for Buddhist Studies. Linguists, mountaineering historians and architects were in the room. This was the first time Yogini Retreat Manang was presented at an international academic venue.
In the afternoon session SMA's founder Anne Feenstra and project lead Rebika Karki presented the Phase One design. SMA received the Global Materia Award 2025 in France for sustainable stone architecture.
Milarepa, the best bridge to a non-Buddhist audience
"Manang is truly blessed to have Milarepa throughout thousands of years. We can visit Milarepa's footprint and his great holy cave there. One of his heart-sons is actually a Manangi — a local hunter. After some discussions with Milarepa, he was truly able to connect his life."
"People think Milarepa was torturing himself. But if you really look at the essential point — it is all about de-stress. Extreme weather gives you a level of stress you have no chance to ignore. You need to face it, you need to be with it. In this extreme weather, if you ignore your stress, you won't survive."
The Mase family
"Their family — the Mase family — 500 or 600 years back, is known as a lineage of yogis. Each and every generation, a different type of great practitioners. This is the place where they meditated all the time. The first and second generations, Melong Tsampa Rinpoche and Mase Karma Drugyu Rinpoche, stayed there and truly touched hundreds of people throughout 40, 50, 60 years. Many people hold it very near their heart."
Why here — his own answer
"Once I visited there, I received such a warm welcome. Some vultures even started to show many precious symbols. Something arose naturally from within. I said: I feel wonderful here. Definitely there is something profound connection. In Manang, the people offer their heart. They decided to sell the land at such a low price. People are quite united. That is actually the connection point."
"I'm not a doer, not a worker. But in Manang, especially the people — they offer their heart. That is what keeps me there."
The vision
"I started to dream. And I started to invest, not bringing some project there. I truly wanted to invest my life there. It is not just about a building. It is about a community."
On building in the mountains
"In Ladakh, in Tibet, and also in Manang — these high-altitude areas — we are rushing to bring infrastructure that is not suitable for the ecosystem, not suitable for health. I truly believe this mountain architecture concept can offer the local people to see that everything about those architecture is actually very much local, very much eco-friendly. Heat and everything is well surveyed, well calculated, something solar related."
"The air itself, the quality of air and water itself, it's truly gonna heal your body. Even if your mind resists, there is no question that it cannot heal your body."
"I truly feel blessed and proud to have found SMA as our partner. Their work alone carries a future vision… Because no one can stop the changes. Society is changing drastically."
2. The Manang vision session, 28 July 2026
The structure he gave us himself
"What vision? The vision of the whole thing. Now you're the third generation — what are you going to do? Why are you here? Why are you doing this? … This is a platform where we want to connect people."
"What, why, and how. This structure is really nice."
The two lengths he asked for
"Sometimes people just want to hear the story, so we put the whole story in. But it is also good if we can be more concise, because some people don't have that much patience. … For the ones without patience, or the ones already at a certain stage of practice, the story isn't needed. We go straight to your vision."
Two lengths for two audiences. He specified that; we did not design it.
Why this lineage does not lead with credentials
"That family… if you really go back five or six hundred years, it is actually a Manang family. I don't think many of the Manangi people knows their family, like those have heritage. Because it is not their interest to say 'I am this and that,' and asking people for — give the credit or give the respect. They have earned the respect with their own presence, with their own pure work, pure practice."
"What you see is a very ordinary person… he gives a hand — he is in fact a genuine master. But to him that does not matter. He simply put everything into his own plain life: a father with many children, and at the same time the assistant of his grandfather, the yogi."
"Sometimes spiritual status creates a great deal of distance and separation. Here there is almost no distance at all. People feel very close."
"And so the wisdom came down across the generations. But the most important thing is that the love was there, the warmth was there."
Why he took it on
"This feeling arose in me as if out of nowhere, and filled me. Because both of those generations had gone. But I could really feel it… through his sacred blessing, his guidance, and the vastness of his aspiration, I too have been able to make the effort to walk this path. He saw it — perhaps he felt and saw — that my being there is better suited to carrying this work on."
"I was never a walker — never intended to walk or anything. But I went for a short visit. Actually, I love it. I can feel the environment and the love."
What the place is meant to do — four stages
"If you really look at it, it comes with a viewpoint. It helps you to reconnect. And you have a space to do that. And it needs your good heart, your bravery — after reconnecting, acceptance, whatever it is. Then there is adjustment. And finally, only harmony is left."
Reconnect → acceptance → adjustment → harmony
Who may come
"If you don't care, if you don't value these things, then you are not that person. If you care — okay. You are the worthy one, you are the right one. Dharma is going to work beautifully on you. No matter if you were born as a non-believer, or of another faith, or whatever."
"Dharma doesn't distinguish anything, whoever you are, whatever your background."
Operating principles already settled
"This should be the core — the core essence. Like the main chip. So whatever programme we design, we make sure it follows these core principles. Any form of practice — somebody comes, takes a short retreat, a personal short retreat… individual short-term retreats, up to ten days, cannot be longer than that. And they renew."
"Placement follows what the site can take. Seasonal — just like the four seasons — each focusing on one practice. And the first practice we just focus on the Shiwa Dharma… because those elemental energies are very peaceful, very calming, especially after the winter, when the hard weather has passed and everything is settling."
"And there is the local community, and all kinds of cultural needs — be ready to serve at any time, but go in actively and precisely, rather than just planting a base there and leaving it."
Why there has to be a Vajrayogini temple
"Across all the lineages, whichever deity you practise, tummo is the central ground of everything. It is the highway where all the higher yoga tantras meet, and the gateway into the central channel."
"For myself, I went to my teacher and asked about the essential heart of practice. I wanted to build a temple, not just any temple, but one that genuinely serves the heart of practice. He suggested: why not build a Vajrayogini temple? It is very rare, very rare, and it is the root of all practice."
So the temple is not a decorative second-phase item. It is the practice content of the whole campus.
